Research initiative keeps
workplace mental health on the agenda

by Francine Knoops

The city of Vancouver played host to more than 200 practitioners, researchers and policy-makers for the 2nd Canadian Congress on Research on Mental Health and Addiction in the Workplace this past May.

Dr. Julian Barling, professor of Organizational Behaviour and Psychology at the Queen’s School of Business set the tone for the event with his opening message that the focus must shift from outcomes of poor mental health, such as presenteeism and disability claims, to the factors that cause these undesirable workplace outcomes.

Many of the sessions described various education, intervention and prevention initiatives already underway, while others explored frameworks to help explain some of the issues, such as the association between psychiatric disorders and disability in the workplace and the lack of trained professionals as a barrier to meeting assessment and diagnostic needs.

The range of sessions and participants demonstrated the growth of Canadian research initiatives in the area of workplace mental health and it appears that a robust network is beginning to emerge to help build the evidence base.

The $3.2 million federal mental health in the workplace research initiative is providing the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) with the capacity to support research initiatives and hold regular conferences to sustain a research agenda in five theme areas: 1) workplace prevention and promotion, 2) disability management and return-to-work, 3) diagnosis and treatment, 4) stigma and discrimination, and 5) workplace mental health and addiction policies.
